A 51-year-old Bruneian man was killed instantly yesterday after suffering critical injuries when a bus driven by a foreign national hit him while he was fixing a punctured tyre in his car by the side of the road along the Muara-Tutong highway, near the Berakas Forest Reserve.
According to Awang Hassan Hj Abd Kadir, a friend of the victim who was at the scene at 1.15pm, the victim was hit and dragged 40 metres away from his vehicle by the bus, driving in the same direction heading towards Muara.
The Royal Brunei Police Force said that the victim was on his way to work.
The driver of the bus immediately called the police and a team of Police Traffic investigators from the Berakas Police Station immediately rushed to the scene after receiving the call at about 12.39pm.
Paramedics and the Berakas Fire and Rescue Team were also at the scene. The victim was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.
The 34-year-old driver was detained and brought to the police station for further investigation.
Muslim burial rituals were conducted for the deceased and the body was later brought to Bukit Beruang in Tutong for burial.
There was a similar case a few years back when a man trying to fix his car by the side of the road was hit by a truck.
The Royal Brunei Police Force reminded motorists to be more cautious on the road, be tolerant, follow road safety regulations and always be aware of the safety of other road users.
In case of an emergency or car break down, motorists must park their cars at a proper designated areas and switch on emergency indicators or any sign to show emergency. [Borneo Bulletin]
